TECTYL 891D Class I is a premium black, solvent-based, asphaltic corrosion preventive compound manufactured by Daubert Chemical Company, specifically formulated to meet Military Specification MIL-PRF-16173E, Grade 1, Class I requirements. This high-performance coating creates a firm, glossy, black protective film that provides exceptional long-term protection for metal surfaces in various storage and transportation conditions. The Class I designation indicates a conventional formulation that may exceed 2.8 lbs/gallon VOC content, offering maximum protection for applications where environmental regulations permit.

Application Guidelines

  • Preferred application by spray, though brush and dip methods are also effective
  • Recommended ambient and product temperature: 50-95°F (10-35°C) at time of application
  • Apply at 5-6 mils wet film thickness to achieve 2.5-3 mils dry film thickness
  • Touch-dry in 2 hours; fully cured in 24 hours
  • For optimal spray application:
    • Use pumps with ratios of 15:1 or greater
    • Recommended tungsten carbide nozzles (0.015″ to 0.021″ tip orifice)
    • For low ratio pumps (15-30:1): Maximum 150 ft hose length (100 ft of 1/2″, 50 ft of 3/8″)
    • For high ratio pumps (>30:1): Maximum 250 ft hose length (200 ft of 1/2″, 50 ft of 3/8″)

Storage and Handling

  • Store in original containers at recommended temperatures
  • Removal using mineral spirits, hot alkaline wash, or low-pressure steam

Product Applications

Preferred application for the Tectyl 891D Class I solvent-based, rust preventative product is dipping. This product can also be applied by brush or spray. Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the ambient and product temperature be 50 - 95°F (10 - 35°C) at time of application.
