Description

TECTYL® 5187 is a premium water-based corrosion preventive compound manufactured by Daubert Chemical Company, specifically formulated with gelled calcium sulfonate to provide exceptional protection against corrosion in demanding environments. Designed for application to automotive underbodies and transportation equipment, this thixotropic liquid forms a protective barrier that dries to a thick, wax-like film, offering superior resistance to water, moisture, and corrosive elements. As an environmentally friendly water-based formula with minimal VOC content, it delivers industrial-grade protection while maintaining compliance with environmental regulations.

Key Features

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Formulated with gelled calcium sulfonate to create a thick barrier that repels water and moisture
  • Flexible and Durable Film: Once cured, maintains flexibility to withstand substrate movement without cracking or breaking
  • Self-Healing Properties: Waxy film can repair minor damage and maintain protective qualities over time
  • Excellent Environmental Performance: Withstands 1000 hours of 100% condensing humidity without defects
  • Salt Spray Resistance: Endures 500 hours of 5% salt spray with minimal creep back (1mm)
  • Temperature Resilience: Good or better rating in cold temperature gravelometer testing (-20°C)
  • High-Temperature Stability: Flow resistance at 93°C with no sagging
  • Topcoat Compatibility: No discoloration and removable from top coats with no staining
  • Protection Duration: Provides up to 3 years of protection on both metal and wood substrates

Ideal Applications

Automotive Industry:

  • Underbody protection for new and used vehicles
  • Aftermarket rustproofing applications
  • OEM assembly line corrosion protection
  • Repair and restoration of automotive underbodies

Transportation Equipment:

  • Trucks, trailers, and equipment exposed to harsh environmental conditions
  • Protection for components in marine, tropical, and industrial environments
  • Metal surfaces exposed to salt air and high humidity

Specialized Uses:

  • Battery terminal insulation and protection
  • Metal and wood substrates requiring long-term corrosion prevention
  • Equipment requiring galvanic corrosion prevention between dissimilar metals

Application Guidelines

TECTYL® 5187 can be applied using conventional underbody rustproofing equipment. For optimal results:

Equipment Recommendations:

  • Daubert recommends a 15:1 airless pump or greater that can deliver 800-1200 psi
  • Tungsten carbide nozzles with .017″ to .025″ reverse-a-clean tip orifice size
  • High-pressure fluid hose requirements:
    • Use hoses with diameter of at least 3/8 in for distances less than 50 ft
    • For distances up to 150 ft, use 100 ft of 1/2 in hose and 50 ft of 3/8 in hose

Application Parameters:

  • Apply at temperatures above 50°F to allow for proper film formation
  • Compatible with Cold Rolled, Elpo, Plastisol, or Topcoated 4X12 Steel Panels
  • Optimal aging of panels: 72 hours @ 25°C after application
  • Drying timeline:
    • Dry to touch in ½ to 4 hours
    • Weather resistant after 4 hours
    • Fully cured after 24 hours

Storage and Handling

  • Do not freeze the product – Freeze/Thaw Stability is POOR
  • Wet film (within 1/2 hour after application) can be removed with soap and water
  • Dry film can be removed with mineral spirits
  • Users should test the product in advance to ensure suitability for their particular production conditions
  • Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet for health and safety information
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • For warranty claims, written notification must be made within 30 days after product receipt
