Description

TECTYL 518 is a premium, solvent-based corrosion preventive compound manufactured by Daubert Chemical Company, Inc. This military-grade protective coating meets rigorous specifications including MIL-C-0083933A, MIL-C-62218A, and A-A-59295 Type I and II. Formulated as a gelled calcium sulfonate cutback with mineral spirits, TECTYL 518 delivers outstanding long-term protection for various transportation equipment, including automobiles, trucks, trailers, and military vehicles. This thixotropic coating has a gel-like consistency when uncured, becoming more fluid with mixing and agitation. In its liquid form, TECTYL 518 appears amber in color, while the cured film takes on a translucent tan appearance that provides durable protection while allowing visual inspection of underlying surfaces.

  • Marine applications (above waterline)

Industrial Uses:

  • Metal equipment exposed to outdoor environments
  • Storage tanks and containers
  • Steel structures requiring corrosion protection
  • Equipment operating in high humidity conditions
  • Facilities in coastal environments
  • Wood substrates requiring weatherproofing

Application Guidelines

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from rust, loose scale, and other contaminants
  2. Temperature Control: Apply when ambient temperature is between 50-95°F
  3. Equipment Selection: Use conventional rustproofing equipment
  4. Pump Specifications: Daubert recommends a 10:1 airless pump or greater (15:1 or greater for maximum efficiency)
  5. Spray Tip: Use tungsten carbide nozzles with 0.017 to 0.025 reverse-a-clean tip orifice size
  6. Hose Requirements:
    • Use 3/8 in diameter hose for distances less than 50 ft
    • For distances up to 150 ft, use 100 ft of 1/2 in hose and 50 ft of 3/8 in hose
  7. Application Method: Apply evenly to achieve recommended film thickness
  8. Drying Time: Allow 4 hours for weatherproof protection, 24 hours for full cure

Equipment Recommendations:

  • Airless spray equipment (10:1 ratio or greater)
  • Proper spray tips and pressure settings
  • High-pressure fluid hoses of appropriate diameter
  • Cleaning equipment and solvent for equipment cleanup
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Storage and Handling

  • Removal Method: Wet and dry film can be removed with mineral spirits or citrus-based solvents
  • Safety Precautions: Refer to Daubert’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete health and safety information
  • Flammability Warning: Product has a flash point of 105°F, keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames
