Product Information

Description

TECTYL® 502C Class 1 is a premium solvent-based, soft film rust preventive coating manufactured by Daubert Chemical Company. This military-grade corrosion preventive compound is designed to provide a semi-firm, wax-like, translucent amber protective film for both ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces. Approved under Military Specifications MIL-PRF-16173E Grade 2 and meeting the performance requirements of MIL-C-16173E, Grade 2, Class 1, TECTYL® 502C Class 1 balances effective corrosion protection with ease of cleanability. Particularly suitable for outdoor applications where metal temperatures do not reach levels that produce prohibitive flow of the corrosion preventative, this product can be applied by brush, dip, or spray methods, providing long-term protection during storage and shipment.

Ideal Applications

Military and Defense:

  • Protection of military equipment and components during storage and shipment
  • Preservation of tactical and strategic equipment components
  • Protection of precision parts in accordance with military specifications

Industrial and Manufacturing:

  • Protection of precision parts where cleanability is important
  • Preservation of metal components requiring visual inspection
  • Protection of ferrous and non-ferrous fabrications
  • Components that may be put into use without coating removal

Transportation and Shipping:

  • Protection of metal parts during domestic and international transit
  • Preservation of components during covered storage
  • Corrosion prevention for parts during extended storage periods

Application Guidelines

TECTYL® 502C Class 1 can be applied by brush, dip, or spray methods:

  • Application Methods: Can be applied by brush, dip, or spray
  • Surface Preparation: Ensure metal surfaces are clean, dry, and free from rust, oil, and mill scale
  • Application Temperature: Optimal substrate temperature between 10°C and 35°C (50-95°F)
  • Temperature Conditions: Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the ambient and product temperature be 50-95°F (10-35°C) at time of application
  • Thinning: DO NOT THIN – Incorrect thinning will affect film build, dry time, and product performance
  • Thickening Issues: If product thickens due to cold storage or loss of solvent during use, contact Daubert Chemical Company

Storage and Handling

  • Temperature Control: Store at moderate temperatures between 10-35°C (50-95°F)
  • Shelf Life: Best used within 36 months from the production date under proper storage conditions
  • Removal: Can be removed using mineral spirits, hot alkaline wash, low-pressure steam, or citrus-based cleaners
  • Special Applications: When applied inside gearboxes, it dissolves in lubricating oil, eliminating the need for removal at low dilution ratios
  • Safety Precautions: Ensure adequate ventilation during curing to prevent the formation of combustible vapors
  • Container Management: Keep containers sealed when not in use
  • Flash Point Awareness: Note the flash point of 105°F (40°C) for proper safety measures during storage and handling
  • Documentation: Refer to SDS for additional safety information and handling recommendations

Product Applications

Thanks to the solvent carrier, the Tectyl 502C Class I coating can be applied easily using brush, dip, or spray methods and will quickly tighten up as the solvent evaporates. Preferred application for this solvent-based, rust preventative product is dipping. This product can also be applied by brush or spray. Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the ambient and product temperature be 50 - 95°F (10 - 35°C) at time of application.
