Description

Tectyl 185GW Gray is a premium solvent-based gelled calcium sulfonate corrosion preventive compound manufactured by Daubert Chemical Company. This advanced undercoating is designed to provide superior abrasion resistance, weathering, and corrosion protection in demanding marine, tropical, and industrial environments. When applied, Tectyl 185GW Gray forms a non-tacky, wax-like film that is semi-firm yet flexible, repels water, offers self-healing properties, and maintains flexibility even at low temperatures. The distinctive gray color provides added visibility, making it easily identifiable during equipment inspections and ensuring proper coverage on both new and used surfaces.

Ideal Applications

Transportation Equipment Protection

  • Package delivery vans – For extended service life in various weather conditions
  • Municipal transportation equipment – Protection from road salt and environmental factors
  • Truck beverage bodies – For resistance to frequent washing and cleaning chemicals
  • OEM trailers – Factory-applied protection for long service life
  • Vehicle underbodies – Superior protection for cars, trucks, and SUVs
  • Wheel wells and fender liners – Areas prone to road debris and moisture

Industrial Applications

  • Coal handling facilities – Protection from abrasive materials and moisture
  • Coke mills – Resistance to harsh industrial environments
  • Dockside ore and container handling – Protection in marine environments
  • County, state, and interstate highway bridges – Long-term corrosion prevention
  • Battery terminals – Providing insulation and additional protection against corrosion
  • Marine equipment – For protection against saltwater environments

Application Guidelines

  • Apply at 8-10 mils wet to achieve 4-5 mils dry film for optimal performance
  • Surfaces should be clean and free of loose rust, oil, and other contaminants
  • Apply at temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C)
  • Can be applied via spray, brush, dip, or flow coat
  • Dry to touch in 8-10 hours and fully cured in 12-24 hours

Equipment Recommendations

  • Pump Ratios: Use pumps with ratios of 15:1 or greater
  • Spray Gun Nozzles: Tungsten carbide nozzles with orifice size of .017″ to .025″
  • Fluid Hoses: High-pressure fluid hose of at least 3/8 inches for up to 50 ft
  • Low-Ratio Pumps (15-30:1): Up to 150 ft of total hose length
  • High-Ratio Pumps (>30:1): Up to 250 ft of total hose length

This calcium sulfonate-based wax coating provides exceptional protection for up to 5 years on both wood and metal substrates, making it an ideal choice for applications requiring long-term corrosion prevention in challenging environments. The gray color offers the added benefit of easier inspection and more aesthetic appearance where the coated surface may be visible.
