Description

TECTYL® 1420 HAPS Free Black is a premium low VOC, air-dry, waterborne corrosion preventive coating manufactured by Daubert Chemical Company. This environmentally conscious formula is completely free of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) and features a low VOC content (2.8 lbs/gallon), making it ideal for applications where environmental considerations are important. The cured film is black, hard, and flexible, providing effective protection for both ferrous and non-ferrous transportation components and industrial equipment while maintaining excellent adhesion and long-term corrosion resistance.

  • Vehicle undercarriage and frame components

Industrial Components:

  • Forged castings and steel frames in industrial settings
  • Machinery and equipment components
  • Metal parts exposed to moderately corrosive environments
  • Protective coating for industrial metal structures

Manufacturing:

  • Production line components
  • Metal products requiring moderate corrosion protection
  • Assembly components during storage and shipment

Application Guidelines

TECTYL® 1420 HAPS Free Black is formulated to be used as supplied without thinning. Ensure uniform consistency prior to use, though continued stirring is generally not required.

Surface Preparation:

  • For maximum performance, metal surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of rust, oil, and mill scale
  • Recommended substrate temperature during application: 50-95°F (10-35°C)

Application Methods:

  • Can be dip applied
  • For optimal results, ensure ambient and product temperature is between 50-95°F (10-35°C) at time of application

Equipment Recommendations:

  • Pumps:
    • Low Ratio: 15-30:1 for up to 150 ft. (100 ft. of 1/2″ hose & 50 ft. of 3/8″ hose)
    • High Ratio: >30:1 for up to 250 ft. (200 ft. of 1/2″ hose & 50 ft. of 3/8″ hose)
  • Spray Gun Tips:
    • Tungsten carbide nozzles with a .017″ to .021″ tip orifice size
  • Hoses:
    • Minimum diameter of 3/8 inch for fluid hoses
  • Recommended Sprayer:
    • QUICKCOAT Precision Sprayer for optimal application

Important Notes:

  • If product thickens due to cold storage or loss of water and coalescing solvent, contact Daubert Chemical Company
  • DO NOT THIN the product as incorrect thinning will affect film build, dry time, and performance
  • DO NOT FREEZE the product—the waterborne formula is freeze-sensitive
  • The dry film is not normally intended for removal but can be stenciled over after the film is cured
  • Tectyl WBS-B, citrus or alkaline cleaner will remove fresh residue accumulated on application equipment
  • If removability is a factor, contact Daubert Chemical Company and samples should be evaluated prior to application

Storage and Handling

  • Store at temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C)
  • Mild agitation is recommended prior to use
  • Protect from freezing temperatures
  • Adequate ventilation is required for cure and to ensure against formation of a combustible liquid
  • The partially cured film should not be exposed to ignition sources such as flares, flames, sparks, excessive heat, or torches
  • The addition of any product over or under this coating is not recommended due to potential chemical incompatibility
  • Refer to Daubert’s Material Safety Data Sheet for complete health and safety instructions
