Which metalworking coolant should you use?

Metalworking coolants are concentrates you dilute with water to cool the tool, lubricate the cut and carry chips away. The three families differ mainly in how much oil they contain.

Synthetic, semi-synthetic or soluble oil

Synthetic coolants such as DuraKut 2000 and 4010 contain no mineral oil. They run clean, resist foaming and suit grinding and ferrous machining in central systems. Semi-synthetics such as DuraKut 450, 525, 8830B and 8873 add some oil for lubricity and cover the widest range of operations. Soluble oils such as DuraKut 6185 and 6195EP carry the most oil and suit heavy cuts and harder alloys, including aluminum, Inconel and titanium.

What else to check

Match the coolant to the metals you cut, your water hardness and whether you run individual sumps or a central system. Each product page lists the metals and operations it is designed for, with the SDS and technical data sheet. Concentrates are sold in pails, drums and totes, and larger containers ship by freight. If you are unsure, tell us the metal and the operation and we will suggest a starting point.

FAQ

Common questions

Still unsure? Call (972) 417-1288 and talk to someone who knows the products.
What is the difference between synthetic and semi-synthetic coolant?

Synthetic coolants contain no mineral oil, so they run cleaner and cooler and are well suited to grinding. Semi-synthetics contain some oil, which adds lubricity for milling, drilling, tapping and turning.

Which coolant is best for aluminum?

Look for a product rated for non-ferrous metals. DuraKut 525 is formulated for aluminum and ferrous alloys, DuraKut 450 for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and the soluble oils DuraKut 6185 and 6195EP for aluminum and high-alloy steels.

What sizes are available?

DuraKut coolants are sold as concentrate in pails, drums and totes. Drums and totes ship by freight.

How do I pick the right concentration?

The technical data sheet for each coolant lists the recommended mix ratio for each operation. If you are not sure, call (972) 417-1288 and tell us the metal, the operation and your system.
